** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The River Corrib, flowing through Galway City, Ireland, is a relatively short but powerful river connecting Lough Corrib, the country's largest lake, to Galway Bay. Due to its connection to the large, deep lough and its rapid flow, the water temperature remains quite cool throughout the year. Typically, seasonal water temperatures in the Corrib range from approximately 8∘C to 16∘C (46∘F to 61∘F), with the lower end experienced during the winter months and the higher end during mid-to-late summer. These temperatures mean that the water is almost always bracingly cold for casual swimming.
Despite the low temperatures and the river's strong currents, especially near the Salmon Weir and the city centre, organised open-water swimming is permitted in specific areas. Events like the annual Longest Day Swim allow participants to navigate sections of the river under controlled conditions, demonstrating that swimming is possible for experienced individuals with safety measures in place. However, general, unsupervised public swimming is discouraged due to the cold temperatures, currents, and water safety concerns. The river’s course through the city is picturesque, passing by attractions such as the Spanish Arch, Galway Cathedral, and the historically significant Salmon Weir, offering scenic views for visitors not venturing into the water.
