*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Ballina, a lively town in County Mayo, sits on the banks of the River Moy, one of Ireland’s most famous salmon rivers. The river’s temperature reflects the mild but often cool climate of Ireland’s west coast. In winter, the water typically ranges between 4–6°C (39–43°F), while in summer it warms to around 14–17°C (57–63°F). On sunny, calm days in July or August, shallow edges and slower stretches can reach 18°C (64°F), though the main current remains brisk. These temperatures make the Moy refreshing rather than warm, with the best swimming conditions appearing in late summer when the air is mild and the water has retained some warmth.
Swimming in the River Moy at Ballina is allowed, but it should be done carefully, as the river is deep in places and subject to changing flows, especially near weirs. Local swimmers sometimes take short dips during the warmer months, and organized open-water events occasionally take place under supervision. Wetsuits are recommended outside mid-summer due to the cool temperatures. Beyond swimming, Ballina offers fishing, kayaking, and scenic riverside walks. The town is close to the beaches of Enniscrone and Lacken, as well as the Nephin Beg mountains, making it a hub for outdoor activity and natural beauty in western Ireland.
