*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The River Great Ouse, one of England’s longest rivers, flows gently from Northamptonshire through Bedford, St Neots, and Ely before reaching the Wash on the North Sea. Its broad and slow-moving character allows the water to warm more easily than in fast-flowing upland rivers. In winter, the Great Ouse typically measures between 4 and 6°C (39–43°F), remaining cold and often misty in the early mornings. By spring, it gradually rises to around 9–12°C (48–54°F). During the height of summer, particularly in July and August, the river can reach 18–21°C (64–70°F), especially in shallow or sunlit stretches. In early autumn, temperatures fall back to about 13–15°C (55–59°F), keeping a comfortable mildness for late-season swims.
Swimming in the River Great Ouse is popular and generally allowed in many areas, provided swimmers stay cautious and aware of boat traffic. The water is usually clean, with gentle currents that make it suitable for open-water swimming during the warmer months. Many locals enjoy early-morning or evening dips in places like Bedford or St Ives. The river also offers pleasant alternatives to swimming, such as kayaking, paddleboarding, or riverside walks. Along its course, historic towns, meadows, and landmarks like Ely Cathedral create a peaceful backdrop for recreation and relaxation.
