*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
The River Exe flows through the heart of Exeter in Devon, and like most UK rivers, its water temperature is seasonal, peaking in the summer months. During the coldest part of winter, water temperatures can drop to around 5∘C to 8∘C (41∘F to 46∘F). By contrast, the summer offers the warmest conditions, with temperatures in the slower-moving sections and the Exeter Ship Canal often reaching 16∘C to 19∘C (61∘F to 66∘F), making it just about comfortable for swimming, though a wetsuit is often preferred.
While much of the river is technically open for wild swimming, city authorities often advise caution due to strong currents, hidden obstacles, and pollution concerns, particularly near the estuary and after heavy rainfall. Dedicated swimming opportunities are more popular upstream at places like Brampford Speke, a known wild swimming spot. For those staying dry, the historic Exeter Quayside offers numerous pubs and restaurants right on the water, and the city centre provides unique attractions like the medieval Underground Passages and the stunning Exeter Cathedral.
