*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The River Nith, flowing through Dumfries and Galloway in southwest Scotland, is one of the country’s most scenic lowland rivers. Rising in the Carsphairn Hills and winding through wooded valleys before reaching the Solway Firth, the Nith reflects the cool, temperate maritime climate of the region. In winter, the river’s water temperature usually remains between 3 and 5°C (37–41°F), staying cold and swift after rainfall. By spring, it gradually warms to around 8–10°C (46–50°F). During midsummer—particularly in July and August—the Nith can reach 14–16°C (57–61°F) in calmer stretches, though shaded and upland areas remain cooler. As autumn approaches, the water cools again to around 9–11°C (48–52°F), keeping a refreshing feel through much of the year.
Swimming in the River Nith is possible and increasingly enjoyed by wild swimmers, especially in tranquil sections near Dumfries and Thornhill. The water is clean and scenic, though swimmers should always be aware of variable currents and deeper pools formed by the river’s natural meanders. On warm days, its clear flow offers pleasant conditions for short dips or longer swims. The Nith Valley also provides excellent opportunities for fishing, canoeing, and riverside walks, with nearby attractions such as Drumlanrig Castle, Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve, and the Dumfries countryside adding to its appeal.
