The Jarama (Río Jarama) near Madrid experiences marked seasonal changes in water temperature linked to rainfall, flow and depth. In winter the river commonly cools to roughly 4–8 °C (39–46 °F), while spring temperatures typically rise to about 8–15 °C (46–59 °F) as snowmelt and fresher flows moderate conditions. In summer, shallow stretches exposed to sun can warm to roughly 18–24 °C (64–75 °F), though deep or fast-flowing parts remain cooler. During autumn temperatures usually fall back into the 10–16 °C (50–61 °F) range. These figures vary locally and year to year depending on droughts, upstream reservoirs and recent rainfall, so spot measurements can differ from seasonal averages.
Swimming in the Jarama is not widely endorsed as an organized activity and many stretches are not official bathing areas. Authorities often discourage swimming because water quality can be variable—affected by agricultural runoff, treated or untreated discharges and occasional algal growth—and because rivers contain hidden hazards such as currents, submerged debris and changing depths without lifeguard supervision.
