Wimbleball Lake is a large upland reservoir on the edge of Exmoor whose water stays relatively cool through the year. Typical seasonal surface temperatures run from around 4–8 °C (39–46 °F) in winter, rise to 6–12 °C (43–54 °F) in spring, reach roughly 12–20 °C (54–68 °F) at the warmest points of summer, and fall back to about 8–14 °C (46–57 °F) in autumn. Temperature can vary with depth, time of day and weather, so even in summer the water can feel chilly compared with sheltered inland lakes.
Swimming at Wimbleball is permitted and the lake is used for organised watersports and open-water swimming events, but it is not a lifeguarded public beach. Caution is advised because it is a working reservoir with cold water, sudden depth changes, submerged hazards and occasional boat traffic; many people wear wetsuits and follow safety briefings. Nearby attractions include Exmoor’s walking routes and high moorland, the traditional village of Dulverton and scenic features such as Tarr Steps, making the area popular for combined outdoor activities.
