Wickiup Reservoir, located in central Oregon, experiences a wide range of water temperatures through the year because of its high-desert climate and varying depth. In winter the surface commonly hovers near freezing, roughly 34–40°F (1–4°C). Spring brings gradual warming with surface waters typically between 40–55°F (4–13°C) as snowmelt and runoff continue to cool the reservoir. Peak summer conditions often push surface temperatures into the mid-60s to low-70s°F, about 18–23°C, though shallow bays can warm a bit more on hot, calm days. By autumn the surface cools back toward the 50s°F (10–15°C) as air temperatures drop. Regardless of season, deeper water stays significantly colder than the surface, and temperatures can vary by location and time of day.
Recreational swimming is generally permitted at Wickiup Reservoir and people do swim there during warm months, but there are important cautions. There are limited formal beach facilities or lifeguards, boat traffic can be heavy in summer, and cold-water shock from unexpectedly cold areas or sudden drop-offs is a real hazard.
