*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Trap Pond is a relatively shallow, tannin-stained pond in southern Delaware, so its water temperature tends to track seasonal air temperatures more closely than deep lakes. Typical surface temperatures commonly run from about 33–45°F (1–7°C) in winter, through roughly 45–65°F (7–18°C) in spring, warming to approximately 70–80°F (21–27°C) in the warmest summer months, and falling back into a 50–70°F (10–21°C) band in autumn. Because the pond is shallow and shaded in places by standing bald cypress, localized temperatures can vary across the pond and through the day; deeper or shaded pockets stay cooler while shallow, sunny areas warm fastest.
Swimming at Trap Pond is not organized with a lifeguarded beach; there is no official supervised swim area, so any swimming is effectively at your own risk. Park management and many visitors caution against casual swimming because of limited visibility in tannin-dark water, submerged tree stumps and roots, and regular boat and paddlecraft activity, all of which raise safety concerns. For those seeking water recreation, paddling, canoeing, kayaking and fishing are the park’s primary promoted activities, while people who choose to enter the water should do so cautiously and be aware of changing temperatures and conditions.
