** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Split Hand Lake typically follows the seasonal temperature pattern of Minnesota lakes. After ice-out in spring, surface temperatures commonly range from about 40–60°F (4–16°C) as the lake slowly warms. By mid to late summer the surface frequently reaches roughly 68–80°F (20–27°C), with the warmest days sometimes pushing slightly higher in shallow bays. In fall the surface cools back toward 45–60°F (7–16°C) before freezing, and during winter the lake is usually ice-covered with water under the ice near 32–39°F (0–4°C), where the deeper water remains close to 39°F (4°C), the temperature of maximum density.
Swimming is generally possible at Split Hand Lake during the ice-free months because summer surface temperatures rise into a comfortable range for recreational bathing and public access is often available. Whether swimming is advisable depends on local conditions: designated beaches, water clarity, algal blooms, current advisories, depth changes and the absence of lifeguards all affect safety. In winter the ice precludes normal swimming, and cold water even in spring and fall can pose cold-shock risks. Always observe posted rules and water-quality advisories before entering the water.
