Lake of Thunder Lake in Minnesota experiences the same seasonal swing in water temperature typical of small inland lakes in the region. During winter months the lake is usually at or just above freezing under ice cover, around 32°F (0°C). As ice breaks up in spring, surface temperatures commonly range from the mid-30s to mid-50s°F (2–13°C) depending on air temperatures and runoff. In summer the surface warms substantially, with typical highs in the mid-60s to upper-70s°F (18–26°C) and occasional warm spells pushing parts of the lake into the low 80s°F (27–28°C) on calm, sunny days; deeper water remains cooler. By fall the surface cools again into the 40s–60s°F (5–15°C) as the lake destratifies and prepares for freeze-up.
Swimming is generally possible at Lake of Thunder Lake where public access or private shoreline allows it, but local ordinances, posted advisories, water quality or harmful algal blooms can restrict bathing at times. Much of the year, especially early spring and late fall, water temperatures are cold enough to cause discomfort or increased risk of cold-water shock, so swimmers typically prefer midsummer when surface temperatures exceed about 70°F (21°C).
