Oijärvi is a lake in the northern part of North Ostrobothnia, near the municipality of Ii, characterized by its northern location and natural setting. Swimming is permitted across its shores, including at local public beaches, a fundamental right secured by Finland's Everyman’s Rights. This principle grants recreational access to all natural waters, allowing swimming in the lake's clean water without special permission. Designated swimming spots often provide safer access and monitored water quality for bathers.
The water temperature in Oijärvi is largely dictated by the long northern winter. The lake is frozen for an extended period, typically from November to May, with the water under the thick ice layer holding a consistently very cold temperature, generally between 0∘C and 4∘C. The season for comfortable surface swimming is very brief, peaking in July. During this peak warm month, the surface temperature can reach an approximate range of 17∘C to 21∘C in shallower, sun-warmed areas. Outside of the summer peak, the water quickly cools, making it only suitable for the practice of cold-water swimming.
