Lake Iso Lohijärvi, located in western Lapland near Ylitornio, is a clear and tranquil lake surrounded by northern forests and low hills. Its high-latitude location means that the water temperature remains relatively cool throughout the year. In spring, after the ice melts in May, the surface water temperature is about 3–6 °C (37–43 °F). During early summer, it gradually warms to 12–16 °C (54–61 °F), and in July, at the warmest time of the year, it typically reaches 17–20 °C (63–68 °F). On particularly warm days, shallow shores may briefly rise to 21–22 °C (70–72 °F). By September, the water cools below 10 °C (50 °F), and the lake usually freezes again by late October or November.
Swimming in Lake Iso Lohijärvi is allowed and practiced mainly during the short Arctic summer. The water is clean and of good quality, though it tends to stay refreshingly cool even in midsummer. Local residents and visitors swim at small beaches and piers, enjoying the peaceful surroundings and clear air.
