** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Norris Lake, a TVA reservoir in northeastern Tennessee, experiences substantial seasonal variation in surface water temperature. In summer months the surface commonly warms to the mid-70s to mid-80s °F (about 24–29 °C), and during hot spells can approach the upper-80s °F (30–31 °C). Spring brings a steady warm-up from the 40s–60s °F (4–16 °C) as snowmelt and runoff cool the basin, while fall sees a decline from the 60s into the 40s–50s °F (16–4–10 °C). Winters are typically cold enough that surface readings often sit near the mid-30s to low-40s °F (1–6 °C). Like many reservoirs, Norris stratifies in summer: surface layers are warmer while deeper water remains much cooler, often in the 50s–60s °F (10–16 °C), which can be a shock to swimmers who dive or swim vertically.
Swimming at Norris Lake is allowed in many locations but is subject to local rules, private property rights, and safety considerations. There are no widespread lifeguarded beaches maintained across the entire lake, and areas near marinas, boat ramps, or dam infrastructure may be posted against swimming for safety. The seasonal temperature swings make summer the most comfortable time for casual swimming, whereas spring and late fall pose risks of cold-water shock and hypothermia. Visitors should heed posted signs, respect private docks, be mindful of boat traffic, and choose sheltered areas with awareness of changing temperatures.
