** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Douglas Lake, a TVA reservoir in eastern Tennessee, shows a clear seasonal cycle in surface water temperature. In winter months surface temperatures commonly fall into the mid-30s to mid-40s °F (about 2–7 °C). Spring brings a steady rise, with typical ranges from roughly 50–65 °F (10–18 °C) as the lake warms. Peak summer temperatures are usually reached in July and August, often topping out between about 70–85 °F (21–29 °C), with shallow coves warming faster than deeper sections. In autumn the lake cools again, generally settling around 60–70 °F (15–21 °C) before moving toward winter lows. Local factors such as depth, shoreline exposure, and dam releases can cause significant short-term and localized variations in temperature.
Swimming is permitted on Douglas Lake and the reservoir is used for recreational swimming at campgrounds, marinas, and public access areas, but it is subject to posted rules and safety considerations. There are few lifeguarded beaches, so swimmers should exercise caution: boat traffic, submerged hazards, sudden drop-offs, and cold-water exposure—especially when water is below about 60 °F (15 °C)—can increase risk. Water releases from the dam can also produce colder currents downstream. Visitors are advised to swim in designated areas, heed signage, and be mindful of seasonal temperature-related safety issues.
