** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake of the Mosinee Flowage, like many inland Wisconsin flowages, shows a strong seasonal pattern in surface water temperature. In spring the surface is cool, often in the mid-40s to low 60s °F (7–17 °C) as snowmelt and chilled runoff dominate. By summer, surface temperatures commonly warm to the low 70s to low 80s °F (22–28 °C) on calm, sunny days and can occasionally reach the mid-80s °F (29–30 °C) during heat waves. In early autumn the surface cools back into the 50s and 60s °F (10–20 °C). When the lake freezes in winter the exposed surface is at or below 32 °F (0 °C) while water just under the ice remains near the temperature of maximum density, roughly 33–39 °F (1–4 °C). Deeper water stays significantly colder year-round due to stratification.
Swimming in the Mosinee Flowage is generally permitted from shorelines and public access points, and many people swim there in the warm months because surface temperatures are comfortable for recreation. There are no statewide bans, but safe swimming depends on local conditions: wind and boat traffic, absence of lifeguards, water clarity, and occasional algal blooms or posted advisories can make swimming unsafe at times. Because deeper water remains cool even in summer, swimmers should be cautious about temperature shock and current or wake conditions near boat channels.
