** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
There is not a widely known Minnewashta Lake in Iowa; the better-known Lake Minnewashta is located in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul region of Minnesota. For that kind of Midwestern glacial lake, water temperatures follow a clear seasonal pattern. During winter months the surface is near freezing, about 32°F (0°C) under ice. In spring the surface gradually warms from roughly 40–55°F (4–13°C) as ice melts and runoff continues. By late spring and early summer temperatures commonly reach 55–70°F (13–21°C). Peak summer surface temperatures often range from about 70–80°F (21–27°C), and on hot, stagnant summers portions can approach the mid-80s°F (around 29°C). In autumn the lake cools again, moving through 60–45°F (16–7°C) as the season progresses.
Swimming is generally possible during the ice-free months, but whether it is allowed at any specific shoreline depends on local park rules, posted signs and water-quality advisories. Many regional lakes offer informal shore or park swimming rather than lifeguarded beaches, so visitors should observe posted closures for algae blooms or bacterial contamination and use caution: colder waters below roughly 60°F (15°C) can be uncomfortable and increase hypothermia risk, while warmer, stagnant water can bring bacterial or algal hazards. Always follow local authorities’ guidance and check current conditions before entering the water.
