** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Storm Lake, in northwest Iowa, is a shallow, naturally occurring lake whose surface temperatures vary widely with the seasons. In spring the water typically ranges from about 40–65°F (4–18°C) as seasonal warming progresses, while summer surface temperatures often reach the mid-60s to low 80s°F (18–28°C) on warm days, especially in shallower bays. During fall the lake cools back into roughly 45–68°F (7–20°C) before winter brings near-freezing conditions and ice in most years, with water under ice often around 32–40°F (0–4°C). Because Storm Lake is relatively shallow, it can heat up quickly in prolonged warm weather and also cool rapidly after cold fronts, so short-term temperatures can vary from these typical ranges.
Swimming at Storm Lake is generally permitted at maintained public beaches and designated recreational areas, and many people swim there in summer when surface temperatures are comfortable. Local authorities monitor water quality, and swimming may be restricted or discouraged temporarily if tests indicate high bacteria levels or harmful algal blooms, which can occur in warm, stagnant conditions. Swimmers should use designated beach areas, heed posted advisories, and remember that early- and late-season water can be shockingly cold even when air temperatures feel mild.
