Location & Local Information
The so-called Lake of Arno refers to sections of the Arno River in Tuscany where the flow widens into calm, lake-like areas, especially near artificial reservoirs such as those close to La Penna and Levane. These basins collect water from the river and surrounding hills, creating stretches that resemble small lakes. The water temperature in these areas changes significantly with the seasons. In winter, it averages between 5 and 8°C, in spring it rises to 12–16°C, and during summer it reaches 22–26°C, with shallower parts occasionally warmer. In autumn, it cools again to around 14–18°C.
Swimming in the Arno’s lake-like reservoirs is technically possible but regulated. In some sections, swimming is discouraged because of safety and water management purposes, while in others locals occasionally bathe or kayak during summer. The water quality varies depending on rainfall and flow, but it is usually clean enough for recreational use in calmer stretches. Overall, these areas offer scenic natural beauty and refreshing conditions, especially on hot Tuscan days.
