** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Independence typically follows the seasonal temperature patterns of shallow Minnesota lakes. After ice-out in spring, surface temperatures are often chilly, roughly 35–55°F (2–13°C) as the water gradually warms. In summer the surface commonly reaches its peak, often in the 70–80°F range (21–27°C) on warm afternoons, with deeper layers remaining cooler. By early fall the lake cools back toward 50–65°F (10–18°C) as air temperatures drop, and in winter the lake re-freezes with surface ice near 32°F (0°C) and sub-ice water temperatures generally just above freezing, around 34–39°F (1–4°C).
Swimming is generally allowed at Lake Independence and is a common summer activity because surface temperatures in mid-summer become comfortable for recreational bathing and there are public and private access points along the shoreline. Whether it is advisable to swim depends on current conditions: local water-quality advisories, blue-green algae blooms, bacterial tests, aquatic vegetation, weather, and life-guarding or posted rules can restrict or discourage swimming at times. In winter, ice conditions require caution and approved ice-access and safety practices if any activity is contemplated. As always, check current local advisories and signage before entering the water.
