Lake Hankavesi-Välivesi, located in South Ostrobothnia in western Finland, forms a connected lake system near the town of Ähtäri. It is part of the Lapuanjoki river basin and is known for its clear, clean water and gently sloping shores. The lake’s temperature follows the typical seasonal pattern of Finnish inland waters. After the ice melts in late April or early May, the surface water is about 4–7 °C (39–45 °F). During early summer, it gradually warms to 13–16 °C (55–61 °F), and in July, the warmest month, Hankavesi-Välivesi usually reaches 18–22 °C (64–72 °F). On calm, sunny days, shallow areas can exceed 23 °C (73 °F). By late September, the temperature drops below 10 °C (50 °F), and the lake generally freezes again by November.
Swimming in Hankavesi-Välivesi is allowed and very popular during the summer. The water quality is good, and the area has several well-maintained beaches, especially near Ähtäri’s town center and camping areas. The lake’s clean water, moderate warmth, and peaceful setting make it ideal for bathing and outdoor recreation.
