*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Cowichan Lake on southern Vancouver Island, British Columbia, is a large freshwater lake known for its scenic beauty and recreational use. Its water temperature follows the mild island climate and relatively shallow depth compared to glacier-fed lakes. In winter and early spring, the lake’s surface averages around 7 °C (45 °F). As the season advances into late spring and early summer, temperatures rise to roughly 11-13 °C (52-55 °F) by June. During the warmest period in July and August, surface temperatures may reach up to 14 °C (57 °F) in shallow, sun-exposed bays. In autumn, cooling air and shorter days bring the water temperature back down to around 9-11 °C (48-52 °F) by October.
Swimming is allowed in Cowichan Lake and it is a popular destination for summer recreation, including swimming, paddle-boarding and kayaking. However, despite the pleasant air temperatures in summer, the water remains on the cool side for extended swims, so visitors should be prepared for brisk conditions. The mild interior island climate and sheltered bays help warm the surface somewhat, but the lake’s deeper portions remain significantly cooler. For comfortable and safe swimming it is best to choose the summer months (late June through August) and to stay in the shallower areas near shore, where the water warms most quickly.
