** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Atwood Lake, a reservoir in eastern Ohio, experiences pronounced seasonal shifts in surface water temperature. In spring (April–May) surface readings typically range from about 45–65°F (7–18°C) as the lake warms after winter. Summer brings the warmest conditions, with surface temperatures commonly reaching 70–82°F (21–28°C) in June through August, though deeper water remains considerably cooler. In early fall (September–October) temperatures generally fall back into the 50–70°F (10–21°C) band as air temperatures decline. Winter months often see surface temperatures near freezing, roughly 32–40°F (0–4°C), and portions of the lake can ice over on cold spells. Thermal stratification and sudden temperature drops near depth changes are typical of reservoirs, so surface measurements can differ from deeper water.
Swimming at Atwood Lake is permitted in designated recreation areas, particularly during the warmer months when the park manages beaches for public use. The allowance for swimming reflects the lake’s role as a multiuse recreational resource, but access and safety depend on posted advisories, water‑quality monitoring, and seasonal facility hours. Swimmers should follow local signage and guidance because conditions such as water temperature, bacterial blooms, boat traffic, and weather can influence safety; cooler or variable temperatures and underwater hazards mean caution is warranted even in summer.
