Ardleigh Reservoir, near Colchester in Essex, is a relatively deep body of water used primarily for water supply, wildlife and angling. Water temperatures vary through the year: in winter the surface typically sits around 4–8 °C (39–46 °F), spring warms to roughly 8–14 °C (46–57 °F), summer can reach about 17–22 °C (63–72 °F) on warmer days, and autumn cools back to near 10–15 °C (50–59 °F). These are approximate seasonal ranges and actual temperatures depend on recent weather, depth and wind conditions.
Swimming is generally not permitted at Ardleigh Reservoir. As a working reservoir the site is managed to protect water quality and public safety; steep banks, cold deep water and the absence of lifeguards increase risk, and signage and facility rules typically prohibit open swimming.
