* Current - Actual water temperature value
** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
The Alcántara reservoir (Embalse de José María de Oriol) in Extremadura shows marked seasonal variation in surface water temperature, influenced by its large volume and Mediterranean climate. In winter the surface typically falls to about 6–12 °C (43–54 °F). During spring temperatures rise to roughly 12–20 °C (54–68 °F) as solar heating increases. Summer brings the warmest conditions, with surface water commonly ranging from 20–28 °C (68–82 °F) and occasionally reaching around 30 °C (86 °F) in heat waves; deeper layers remain much cooler year-round. Autumn cooling tends to produce intermediate values near 15–22 °C (59–72 °F). Because it is a deep, reservoir body, thermal stratification and colder currents near intakes or the dam can make local temperatures markedly lower than surface readings.
Swimming at Alcántara is possible in many accessible coves and shore stretches, but it is subject to local rules and safety considerations rather than being universally unrestricted. Authorities may close areas temporarily for water-quality issues, algal blooms, low water levels, or maintenance of hydroelectric and irrigation infrastructure; zones immediately adjacent to the dam, intake structures or heavy boat traffic are often prohibited for safety. Visitors should therefore obey signage and municipal guidance, be aware of sudden currents from releases, and prefer supervised or clearly designated bathing spots.
