Location & Local Information
The Sheriff Muir Paradise Pools, locally known as the Devil's Bucket, are a set of beautiful, natural plunge pools fed by a stream in a wooded gorge near Dunblane. Swimming is popular here and permitted as part of the Scottish right to roam, but it is extremely cold and best suited for experienced wild swimmers. The small plunge pool is replenished by fast-flowing water, meaning temperatures are consistently low.
During the cold season, the water will be close to freezing, around 3∘C to 5∘C (37∘F to 41∘F), and may even freeze over. Even in the height of summer, the pools rarely exceed 14∘C (57∘F), maintaining the risk of cold shock. The area is a fantastic spot for a short, exhilarating dip and features a natural rock slide for the adventurous. The pools are located on Sheriffmuir, a historic moorland famous for the 1715 Battle of Sheriffmuir, and are easily accessible from the historic town of Dunblane.
