*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Edinburgh is built around the Water of Leith, a small river that flows from the Pentland Hills through the city to the Firth of Forth. The river’s temperature reflects the cool Scottish climate, staying fresh throughout the year. In winter, it averages about 4–6 °C (39–43 °F), slowly rising in spring to around 8–10 °C (46–50 °F). During summer, the water can reach 14–16 °C (57–61 °F) in calmer, sunlit stretches, though shaded or faster-moving areas remain colder. By autumn, it cools again toward 9–11 °C (48–52 °F). The Water of Leith’s flow and the city’s moderate maritime weather prevent it from warming much, even during the height of summer.
Swimming in the Water of Leith within Edinburgh is technically allowed but not widely practiced, as sections of the river have strong currents, uneven banks, and limited access. The upper reaches near Balerno are sometimes used by wild swimmers during warm spells, though wetsuits are advisable for comfort and safety. The river is better enjoyed through the scenic Water of Leith Walkway, which passes through quiet wooded valleys and city landmarks. Nearby attractions include Dean Village, Stockbridge, and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, where nature and urban character meet harmoniously.
