Water Temperature: Daily Trends, Historical Records, and Forecast

⚠️ As of today, the minimum water temperature ranges from 54°F (12°C) to 60°F (15°C). The water is significantly warmer, and swimming becomes possible for most people. However, caution may still be required for prolonged stays in the water, as extended exposure can cause discomfort. This is a suitable temperature range for short swims and for those accustomed to cooler water. For more comfortable swimming, it is recommended to use proper gear. It is important to note that these swimming tips and recommendations apply only in good weather. When the air temperature is below 68°F (20°C), and sometimes even below 77°F (25°C), swimming can be unpleasant even with relatively high water temperatures.

** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years

*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast

Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.

Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information

Edinburgh is built around the Water of Leith, a small river that flows from the Pentland Hills through the city to the Firth of Forth. The river’s temperature reflects the cool Scottish climate, staying fresh throughout the year. In winter, it averages about 4–6 °C (39–43 °F), slowly rising in spring to around 8–10 °C (46–50 °F). During summer, the water can reach 14–16 °C (57–61 °F) in calmer, sunlit stretches, though shaded or faster-moving areas remain colder. By autumn, it cools again toward 9–11 °C (48–52 °F). The Water of Leith’s flow and the city’s moderate maritime weather prevent it from warming much, even during the height of summer.

Swimming in the Water of Leith within Edinburgh is technically allowed but not widely practiced, as sections of the river have strong currents, uneven banks, and limited access. The upper reaches near Balerno are sometimes used by wild swimmers during warm spells, though wetsuits are advisable for comfort and safety. The river is better enjoyed through the scenic Water of Leith Walkway, which passes through quiet wooded valleys and city landmarks. Nearby attractions include Dean Village, Stockbridge, and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, where nature and urban character meet harmoniously.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the current water temperature in Edinburgh?
Water Temperature in Edinburgh today is 12.4°C.
What is the water temperature in Edinburgh during the summer months?
The water temperature in Edinburgh in summer fluctuates in the range of 12°C - 21°C.
Is it possible to swim in Edinburgh (United Kingdom) in Water of Leith and what are the possibilities for this?
Although some experienced wild swimmers and occasional informal groups do enter sheltered stretches of the Water of Leith, there are no official bathing sites and variable water quality, hidden hazards, currents, low temperatures and access/legal issues make swimming there generally inadvisable, so most people use supervised pools, designated coastal bathing spots or organized, safety-led wild-swim groups instead.
