*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The Water of Leith flows through the heart of Edinburgh, beginning in the Pentland Hills and winding its way for more than 30 kilometres before reaching the Firth of Forth. Its water remains cool throughout the year, reflecting Scotland’s temperate maritime climate and the steady inflow of upland streams. In winter, the river’s temperature usually ranges between 4–6 °C (39–43 °F), rising to around 8–10 °C (46–50 °F) in spring. During the summer months, it can reach 14–16 °C (57–61 °F) in sheltered stretches, though deeper or shaded sections stay colder. By autumn, the water cools again toward 9–11 °C (48–52 °F), maintaining a refreshing and often brisk character year-round.
Swimming in the Water of Leith is allowed in principle but generally discouraged within the city due to strong currents, limited access points, and variable water quality. However, some experienced wild swimmers enjoy short dips in cleaner, upstream sections near Balerno or Currie during warmer months. Wetsuits are commonly used, as the river rarely feels warm enough for long swims. Beyond swimming, the Water of Leith Walkway offers scenic trails through Edinburgh, passing attractions such as Dean Village, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, and Stockbridge, blending urban life with tranquil natural scenery.
