Location & Local Information
The city of Enerhodar is situated on the banks of the Dnipro River, directly within the area of the former Kakhovka Reservoir, which, prior to its destruction, created a significant body of water. Under normal, pre-invasion conditions, the water temperature in this part of the Dnipro during the summer was comfortable for swimming. Due to its large area and the influence of solar heat, the water typically warmed up to +23 to +26∘C in July and August, allowing local residents and visitors to enjoy long stays on the equipped beaches.
However, the situation regarding swimming opportunities in Enerhodar has fundamentally changed and is now critical. Since 2022, the city has been under temporary occupation, and its location next to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant and the front line makes any presence near the water and in the coastal zone extremely dangerous due to the direct threat of shelling and mine hazards. Furthermore, the destruction of the Kakhovka HPP in 2023 led to the catastrophic shallowing of the reservoir. This severely degraded water quality, destroyed the beaches, and fundamentally altered the hydrological regime of the Dnipro River at this point, making customary swimming impossible.
Therefore, regardless of the actual water temperature—which, under conditions of shallowing and pollution, might warm up faster but with poorer quality—swimming in Enerhodar is currently strictly not recommended and virtually impossible due to the direct threat to life and health associated with hostilities, the occupation regime, and the environmental disaster. The safe resumption of beach recreation here will only be possible after de-occupation, demining, and large-scale restoration work on the water area.
