Location & Local Information
The town of Kobarid lies along the Soča River in western Slovenia, surrounded by dramatic alpine landscapes and valleys. At this point, the river flows through a mix of shallow pools and faster sections. Because the Soča originates in the Julian Alps, the water remains relatively cool even in summer. From June to August, surface temperatures in calmer spots near Kobarid usually reach 16–20°C, while faster and deeper sections stay around 10–14°C. In spring and autumn, the water typically ranges from 8–14°C, and in winter it can drop to 4–6°C.
Swimming in the Soča near Kobarid is popular mainly in calmer pools and slower bends. These areas offer a refreshing way to cool off during hot summer days. However, caution is necessary, as some sections of the river have strong currents or rocky beds that make swimming dangerous. Kayaking, rafting, and floating are also popular activities in the area due to the river’s alpine flow.
