Turin, in the Piedmont region of Italy, is not directly on a large lake but sits within easy reach of several regional lakes such as Viverone, Orta and the western end of Lake Maggiore. Water temperatures in these lakes vary by elevation and exposure: in spring (March–May) surface temperatures commonly range from about 8–16 °C (46–61 °F), in summer (June–August) 20–26 °C (68–79 °F) in the lower-elevation lakes and slightly cooler in mountainous basins, in autumn (September–November) roughly 12–18 °C (54–64 °F), and in winter (December–February) they can fall to 4–8 °C (39–46 °F) or close to freezing in smaller, higher-altitude waters. Swimming is generally allowed in designated bathing areas around these lakes, especially in summer when temperatures are most comfortable, but it depends on municipal regulations and water-quality monitoring that can close beaches temporarily.
