* Current - Actual water temperature value
** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Shumen sits inland in northeastern Bulgaria, where natural water bodies are mainly small rivers, ponds and man-made reservoirs rather than coastal waters. Seasonal temperatures in those rivers and lakes follow a continental pattern: in winter surface temperatures commonly hover around 0–4 °C (32–39 °F), spring brings a rise to roughly 6–15 °C (43–59 °F), and in summer typical surface values reach about 18–26 °C (64–79 °F), with shallow ponds or sheltered bays occasionally warming to near 27–28 °C (80–82 °F). During autumn waters cool again to roughly 10–16 °C (50–61 °F). Local variability is significant depending on depth, flow, shading and recent weather, so short-term temperatures can differ from these averages.
Swimming is possible in Shumen’s lakes and river stretches during the warm months where access is permitted, but it is not universally allowed everywhere. Some reservoirs serve drinking-water or flood-control functions and are legally off-limits; other sites may be open for recreation but lack lifeguards, marked zones or regular water-quality monitoring. Authorities typically restrict bathing for safety reasons (strong currents, sudden depth changes, underwater obstacles) or contamination risks such as bacterial blooms. Visitors should observe local signs and regulations and consider seasonal water temperatures and conditions before entering the water.
