The Tundzha (Тунджа) is a river with varied thermal characteristics: its mountain headwaters stay cool year-round, while lower, lowland stretches warm considerably in summer. Typical seasonal surface temperatures range from close to freezing in winter (about 0–5 °C, 32–41 °F) through cool spring values (roughly 5–15 °C, 41–59 °F) as snowmelt and rains cool the flow, to summer highs commonly between 20–26 °C (68–79 °F) in calmer, shallow sections; on very hot days and in isolated pools temperatures can approach the upper 20s °C (around 80–83 °F). Autumn brings a gradual decline back toward spring values, with sudden drops possible after storms that increase flow and lower temperatures.
Swimming is possible in many informal locations along the Tundzha, especially in summer when water is warm and currents slacken in wider, shallower reaches, but it is not universally permitted. Local authorities may restrict access near dams, weirs, bridges, or water-intake sites, and water quality can vary with agricultural runoff or rainfall, so some stretches are unsuitable for bathing. Safety concerns—strong currents after rain, submerged hazards, and variable water quality—are the main reasons for prohibitions or advisories, so swimmers should follow posted signs and local guidance before entering the river.
