The Kolubara River flows through western and central Serbia, passing towns such as Valjevo and Lazarevac before joining the Sava River. It has a moderate flow and is fed by several smaller tributaries from surrounding hills. Due to the continental climate, its water temperature changes considerably during the year. In spring, it ranges between 10 and 15 °C, while in summer it warms up to 21–26 °C, occasionally reaching 27 °C during hot spells. In autumn, the temperature drops to 14–18 °C, and in winter it often falls below 5 °C, with shallow parts sometimes freezing. The river’s slow flow in the lower course allows for pleasant summer conditions.
Swimming in the Kolubara River is possible, especially in July and August, when the water is at its warmest. Locals often bathe in calm and shallow stretches near villages and towns, though there are no officially organized beaches. The water quality is generally good but can vary after heavy rain due to sediment. Because of uneven depth and occasional stronger currents, swimmers are advised to stay in safe areas. In addition to bathing, the river is used for fishing and recreation, offering a refreshing retreat in warm weather.
