The Chiese River in the Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol area is fed by alpine snowmelt and mountain springs, so its water remains comparatively cool through much of the year. In upper, faster-flowing reaches temperatures typically range from about 0–6 °C (32–43 °F) in winter, 4–12 °C (39–54 °F) in spring, 8–16 °C (46–61 °F) in summer and 6–12 °C (43–54 °F) in autumn. Lower stretches and the connected Lago d’Idro warm more in summer, often reaching 18–26 °C (64–79 °F) on hot days, while they still cool down substantially outside the peak season.
Swimming is generally possible in many parts of the Chiese system, particularly in the lake and slower lowland sections where temperatures are comfortable in summer. However, access and permissibility depend on local regulations, private land ownership and protected natural zones, so swimmers should follow signage. Safety considerations include strong currents in narrower alpine parts, cold shock from fast-changing temperatures, variable depth, and the typical lack of lifeguards; water quality is usually good but can vary seasonally. Because of these factors, people commonly choose designated bathing spots or the warmer lake areas for safe swimming.
