** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Wateree, a reservoir on the Wateree River in central South Carolina, experiences clear seasonal swings in surface water temperature. In winter, surface temperatures commonly range from about 40–55°F (4–13°C). Spring brings steady warming into the mid 50s to low 70s °F (13–22°C) as the lake responds to air temperatures and increased sunlight. By summer the water often reaches the mid to upper 70s and occasionally the low to mid 80s °F (25–29°C), with late summer heat sometimes pushing localized surface readings higher. Autumn sees a gradual cooling back through the 60s and 50s °F (16–13°C) as air temperatures drop. Temperature can vary by depth and location, with shallow coves warming faster and deeper channels remaining cooler.
Swimming is generally permitted in Lake Wateree but it is not primarily developed as a public swim beach, so opportunities depend on access points and local rules. Many people swim from private docks, marinas, or designated areas, especially in warm months when surface temperatures are comfortable for recreational bathing. Caution is advised because there are few lifeguards, boat traffic, submerged trees and drop-offs, and occasional water-quality advisories after heavy rain. Near the dam or outflow areas, currents and colder releases can make conditions hazardous. Checking local advisories and using common-sense water safety practices is recommended before entering the water.
