** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Whitehall Reservoir in Massachusetts experiences the full range of New England seasonal water temperatures. In winter the surface is typically near freezing, roughly 32–39°F (0–4°C), and portions of the reservoir often ice over. During spring and early summer the water warms gradually to about 40–60°F (4–16°C) as snowmelt and cool flows continue. By mid to late summer surface temperatures commonly reach the mid-60s to mid-70s Fahrenheit, about 18–24°C, with shallow bays or sun-exposed areas occasionally climbing into the upper 70s to low 80s°F (25–28°C). Even in summer, deeper water remains noticeably cooler—often in the 50s–60s°F (10–16°C)—because of thermal stratification. In autumn the surface cools back through the 50s and 40s°F (10–5°C) as the lake mixed and prepares to freeze.
Swimming in Whitehall Reservoir itself is generally not permitted because it functions as a drinking-water source and is managed for public water supply and watershed protection; prohibitions help protect water quality and reduce contamination risks, and they also address safety concerns such as steep drop-offs, cold deep water, and boat traffic. Local town or water authority rules determine allowed activities, and nearby recreational ponds or municipal beaches may provide designated swimming opportunities where public bathing is explicitly authorized.
