Location & Local Information
Velické pleso is a mountain lake in the High Tatras, lying at an altitude of over 1,600 meters. Because of its location, the water temperature here stays very low throughout the year, usually between 5–10°C even in midsummer. The lake is fed by mountain streams and snowmelt, so it never really warms up to levels comfortable for regular swimming. Instead, it offers the kind of icy water that is more suitable for short dips or cold-water bathing.
Most visitors who come to Velické pleso enjoy its stunning alpine scenery rather than swimming. However, some adventurous people do enter the lake for a quick plunge, treating it as a refreshing and extreme experience. With steep peaks rising above and the crisp mountain air all around, even a brief moment in the water becomes an unforgettable part of the visit.
