*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Twin Lakes in the Black Hills region of South Dakota typically runs cool most of the year because of elevation and northern latitude. Surface temperatures in summer commonly reach roughly 60–75°F (15–24°C) on warm afternoons, with the warmest pockets sometimes touching the upper 70s°F (25–26°C) in shallow, sheltered bays. In spring and fall the surface is usually about 40–60°F (4–16°C), and by winter the lake approaches freezing—around 32°F (0°C)—with ice forming on exposed areas. Temperatures vary with depth, inflows and recent weather, so surface readings on a sunny day will be warmer than sub-surface values.
Swimming is generally possible where public access and informal beaches exist, and the lake is used recreationally for bathing, kayaking and fishing. However, a short warm season, cool water even in summer, and variable conditions mean many visitors find swimming brisk; wetsuits or brief exposures are common. Local rules or seasonal advisories may limit access at particular sites, and there are often no lifeguards, so swimmers should be cautious about cold-water shock, sudden depth changes and boat traffic. Water quality and safety conditions are best checked locally before swimming.
