** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Albert in eastern South Dakota follows the temperature cycles typical of prairie glacial lakes. In spring, as ice melts, surface readings commonly range from about 40–60°F (4–16°C) and can feel quite chilly. By summer the upper layer warms, often reaching roughly 65–80°F (18–27°C) on warm, calm afternoons; shallow bays can climb a few degrees higher on hot spells. During autumn the surface cools back into the 45–65°F (7–18°C) band before freezing over in winter, when surface temperatures fall to 32°F (0°C) and below and the lake is commonly ice-covered for several months. Deeper water remains colder year-round and temperature stratification can produce sharper gradients between surface and bottom.
Swimming is generally possible in summer when surface temperatures are comfortable, and many visitors swim from shore or small beaches where access is available. Whether swimming is allowed at any specific spot depends on local management, posted rules, and conditions; some areas may lack lifeguards or designated swim zones. Swimmers should also be aware of hazards such as sudden depth changes, weedy shallows, fluctuating water quality, and occasional algal blooms, and should check local advisories before entering the water. In winter, swimming is unsafe due to ice and near-freezing water.
