** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Tainter, a reservoir in Dunn County, Wisconsin, experiences typical seasonal temperature swings for a midwestern lake. In spring the surface water commonly ranges from about 34–55°F (1–13°C) as runoff and cool air keep temperatures low. By summer, surface temperatures usually rise into the mid‑60s to upper‑70s °F (about 18–27°C), with shallow near‑shore water warming fastest on warm sunny days. In autumn the lake cools back to roughly 50–65°F (10–18°C), and in winter the surface often freezes; water under the ice is near 32–39°F (0–4°C), with deeper layers remaining slightly warmer. Thermal stratification can produce cooler deep water even during warm months, so temperatures vary with depth and location.
Swimming at Lake Tainter is generally permitted and is a common recreational use because the lake and adjacent county parks provide public access, beaches, and boat launches. However, actual swimability depends on conditions: early‑season waters can be dangerously cold, and late‑summer warmth can promote algal blooms or bacterial issues that lead authorities to post advisories or close beaches temporarily. Lifeguards are not guaranteed at all access points, so swimmers should obey posted signs, check local health advisories before entering the water, and be mindful of hypothermia risk, boat traffic, and changing weather.
