** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Wissota’s surface water temperature follows a typical northern-U.S. reservoir pattern, warming and cooling with the seasons. In spring the lake often sits in the 40s to low 60s °F (about 4–16 °C) as snowmelt and cool air keep the surface cold. By summer the top layer commonly reaches the 70s to around 80 °F (21–27 °C), and on hot spells can rise into the mid-80s (near 29 °C), while deeper water remains noticeably cooler (often in the 40s–50s °F, roughly 4–10 °C). In autumn surface temperatures drop back through the 50s–60s °F (10–16 °C) into the 30s–40s °F (0–4 °C) as the lake mixes and eventually freezes; winter conditions bring ice cover and near-freezing water under the ice.
Swimming is allowed at public access points and designated beaches (for example at Lake Wissota State Park) but is subject to seasonal conditions and local rules. Authorities monitor water quality and post advisories when algal blooms or other hazards occur, and boat traffic, sudden drop-offs and underwater vegetation can affect safety. Many swimming areas are unguarded, so swimmers should heed posted signs, avoid cold-water exposure in spring and fall to reduce cold-shock risk, and check current advisories before entering the water.
