Sturgeon Lake in Minnesota undergoes pronounced seasonal shifts in surface temperature. In early spring the water is cold, commonly around the mid-30s to mid-50s °F (1–13 °C) as ice melts and stratification has not yet established. By early summer surface temperatures typically climb into the 60s °F (15–21 °C), and during July and August shallow areas and small bays often warm into the low 70s to around 80 °F (21–27 °C), with occasional warmer pockets approaching the mid-80s °F (near 29 °C) on sunny, calm days. Deeper or wind-exposed parts of the lake remain cooler than shorelines. In autumn the surface cools back into the 50s °F (10–15 °C) before refreezing; in winter the lake is generally at or just below freezing at the surface (around 32 °F / 0 °C) where ice forms.
Swimming on Sturgeon Lake is generally possible during the ice-free months because the water warms to comfortable levels and access points and public beaches are open, but practices depend on local sites and posted rules. Caution is warranted because water can remain chilly even in summer in deeper water and early/late season swims carry hypothermia risk.
