** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Salamonie Lake, a Corps of Engineers reservoir in northeastern Indiana, experiences a wide range of surface water temperatures through the year. In winter the lake commonly hovers near freezing, about 33–40°F (1–4°C), while spring sees a steady rise into the 40s and 50s°F (4–15°C) as air temperatures warm. Summer surface temperatures are most comfortable for swimming, typically in the 70–82°F range (21–28°C) on warmer days, though localized conditions and weather can push readings a few degrees higher or lower. By fall the water cools back into the 50s–60s°F (10–18°C). Temperatures drop with depth, so colder conditions prevail below the surface even when the top layer feels warm.
Swimming at Salamonie Lake is generally permitted in designated recreation areas because the lake is managed for multiple public uses, including boating, fishing and beach activities. Designated beaches and day-use areas are provided for swimmers, and water quality is monitored periodically, but lifeguards are often not on duty. Visitors should therefore heed posted rules, be aware of variable water temperatures, underwater hazards and boat traffic, and use caution during shoulder seasons when surface temperatures can be chilly even if air temperatures seem mild.
