** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Loon Lake in Indiana experiences the typical seasonal temperature swings of a midwestern inland lake. In spring the surface often ranges from about 40–60°F (4–15°C) as waters recover from winter cold. During summer the lake commonly warms into the mid-60s to high-70s °F, roughly 18–26°C, and on hot spells can reach low 80s °F (around 27–28°C) at the surface. By fall temperatures usually fall back to the 50–60°F band (10–16°C) as cooling resumes, and in winter the lake surface often approaches or drops below freezing, with ice forming when conditions are sustained below 32°F (0°C).
Swimming is generally possible at Loon Lake during the warmer months where public access or private shoreline use permits it, because summer surface temperatures typically rise into a comfortable range for bathing. However, swimming is subject to local rules and safety considerations: water-quality advisories, harmful algal blooms, posted restrictions, and the absence of lifeguards can limit or discourage entry. In winter the lake is not suitable for swimming due to near-freezing water and ice. Visitors should check local signage and public-health notices before entering the water and exercise normal precautions such as avoiding discolored water and supervising inexperienced swimmers.
