** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Pungo Lake, located in North Carolina’s coastal plain, typically follows the seasonal temperature patterns of shallow inland waters. In summer months surface temperatures commonly range from the mid-70s to mid-80s °F (about 24–29 °C), and on hot, calm days can briefly reach the upper 80s °F (around 31 °C). Spring sees a gradual warming with surface readings often between the low 50s and low 70s °F (10–22 °C), while fall temperatures generally fall through the mid 50s to mid 70s °F (13–24 °C). Winter surface temperatures usually sit in the 40s to low 50s °F (4–12 °C), though deeper or shaded areas remain colder. Because Pungo is relatively shallow in places, it tends to warm and cool more quickly than larger, deeper reservoirs.
Swimming may be possible in parts of Pungo Lake where public access and local regulations allow, but it is not universally permitted everywhere along the shoreline. Access can be limited by private property, posted restrictions, water-quality advisories, or natural hazards such as submerged vegetation and boat traffic, and occasional algal blooms can temporarily close areas. For safety and compliance, swimmers should use designated entry points where available and check current local guidance and health advisories before entering the water.
