*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Drummond, a shallow, tannin-stained lake in Virginia’s Great Dismal Swamp, tends to have relatively cool surface temperatures year-round because of its depth, shading, and peat-rich surroundings. Typical seasonal surface temperatures run roughly 35–45°F (2–7°C) in winter, rise to about 50–65°F (10–18°C) in spring, reach roughly 70–80°F (21–27°C) in midsummer, and fall back to about 50–68°F (10–20°C) in autumn. Because the lake is generally only a few meters deep, surface temperatures can warm quickly on hot, calm days, but overall the dark, nutrient-poor water and forested canopy moderate extreme warming.
Swimming at Lake Drummond is not provided with designated beaches or lifeguards and is generally discouraged rather than actively promoted. The refuge-managed shoreline and the peat-stained water reduce visibility and hide submerged roots and logs, creating safety risks. In addition, the lake’s remote setting and sensitive swamp ecology make it better suited to boating and wildlife observation than to recreational swimming. Visitors considering entering the water should be aware of these conditions and follow refuge guidance to protect personal safety and the habitat.
