** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Pathfinder Reservoir in Wyoming experiences a wide annual range of surface temperatures because of its high-altitude location and continental climate. In winter the reservoir often freezes or stays near the freezing point, with surface readings commonly around 28–35°F (−2 to 2°C). Spring brings a steady warm-up, with water typically in the 35–55°F (2–13°C) band as snowmelt continues. Peak summer surface temperatures usually reach roughly 60–75°F (16–24°C) on warm, calm days, though deeper water remains cooler. By fall the surface cools again, often sitting between about 40–60°F (4–16°C) before ice forms.
Swimming is generally permitted at Pathfinder where public access exists, but opportunities are governed more by practicality and safety than by prohibition. Warm summer surface temperatures make casual swimming feasible, yet there are few if any lifeguarded beaches, significant boat traffic, and sudden cold-water layers that can cause cold shock or hypothermia, so caution is advised. Outside the warmest months the water is usually too cold for comfortable or safe extended immersion. Local signage and rules can restrict swimming in certain areas, and seasonal ice cover effectively forbids it in winter, so recreational swimmers typically choose summer and sheltered spots while observing boating and safety notices.
