The lagoons and small lake-like estuaries in the Myrtle Beach area of South Carolina experience a noticeable seasonal swing in water temperature. In winter (December–February) surface temperatures commonly sit around 50–60°F (10–16°C). Spring (March–May) brings a steady rise, typically into the 60–70°F range (16–21°C). Summer (June–August) is the warmest period, with waters often reaching 75–85°F (24–29°C) or slightly higher on hot, calm days. In fall (September–November) temperatures generally cool from the low 70s down into the mid-to-high 60s °F (21–18°C), depending on storms and cold fronts. Because these are shallow, sheltered bodies connected to tidal creeks and the ocean, short-term fluctuations with weather, freshwater runoff, and tidal exchange are common.
Swimming is allowed in many public beach and park access areas, and the warm summer temperatures make recreational swimming comfortable during that season. However, not all lagoons or lakes are open for bathing: some are privately owned, designated for wildlife habitat, or subject to advisories due to poor water quality, strong currents near inlets, submerged vegetation, or lack of lifeguards.
