** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Winyah Bay is a tidal estuary on the South Carolina coast, so its waters behave more like a brackish bay than a still lake. Water temperatures fluctuate with the seasons and tidal exchange: in winter surface temperatures commonly range from about 45–60°F (7–16°C), spring typically sees 55–72°F (13–22°C), summer often warms to roughly 72–86°F (22–30°C), and fall usually falls back into the 60–75°F (16–24°C) band. Because the bay mixes freshwater from rivers with Atlantic tides, local temperatures can vary from spot to spot and change quickly with wind and currents.
Swimming in Winyah Bay is physically possible in many places but is not the same as swimming at a designated ocean beach. There is no blanket statewide ban on entering the water, yet safety and water-quality concerns often limit recreational swimming: strong tidal currents, shifting channels, boat traffic, submerged debris and oyster beds, and periodic bacterial contamination after heavy rains make some areas unsuitable. Many people prefer sanctioned public beaches or calm, monitored spots for swimming; where swimming occurs in the bay, observers recommend checking local advisories, choosing sheltered areas, and using appropriate clothing (wetsuits in cooler months) and caution.
